We frequently mention church vision statements in our writing. Recently, we shared why vision statements are vital for churches, but what goes into a strong vision statement? Why can’t every church use the same one? And why must churches regularly refresh the methods they use to reach their vision? These are good questions, important to the process of church building and design, which we will address in this post.
What is a Strong Vision Statement?
A church’s vision statement, as defined by Jim Herrington, should create a clear, shared, and compelling picture of the preferred future to which God is calling that church. It is not meant to be kept a secret or known only to church leaders—it is something every member of the congregation should know, embrace, and share.
A strong vision statement is easily communicated and memorable. In today’s fast-paced world, attention spans are short. That’s why vision statements must be concise—something you can explain in 30 seconds or less, often referred to as an “elevator pitch.” When a vision statement is easily remembered, it empowers not just church leaders but the entire congregation to communicate the church’s mission.
Finally, the vision statement must inspire action. It should excite and motivate people to get involved. You want them to say, “Yes, I want to be part of that. What can I do to contribute?”
Clear, sharable, and compelling – when these elements come together, the vision becomes a rallying point within a church building, drawing people into God’s purpose for their lives.
Why Different Churches Need Different Vision Statements
While the ultimate mission of the church—to help people take their next step toward Christ—remains constant, the vision of each church will look different. Why? Because demographics, cultural context, leadership experiences, and the unique gifts of the congregation all influence a church’s direction.
For example, a church in a rural setting will have different needs and opportunities than one located in a bustling urban center. One church may focus on serving families, while another may feel called to reach young professionals, or the underserved in their community. Each church, depending on its vision, will employ different methods to reach its community, even though the message of God will be the same.
However, to remain effective across generations, churches all need to adapt the methods they employ. This is where some churches face challenges, as generational change often happens slowly. People become comfortable with what they know and are naturally resistant to change, yet churches must be willing to evolve to fulfill their vision and mission effectively.
How Churches Have Evolved Over Time
Sometimes it isn’t easy to see the change, but the history of church buildings is a good example of how methods do evolve. There weren’t even church buildings until 300 AD, centuries after Christ’s ministry. The first church buildings were modeled after Roman basilicas, and their designs developed over time:
- Benches to sit on were not introduced until the 6th century.
- Seat backs and pews did not become widely used until the 15th century.
- Colored glass appeared in the 10th century, and stained glass followed in the 11th century.
At the time, these changes may have seemed monumental, but today, they feel like they’ve always been part of church design. Yet clearly church buildings have evolved to meet the needs of different generations and eras.
Refreshing Vision and Moving Forward
As church leaders, it’s essential to regularly evaluate your church’s vision and methods. Is your vision clear, shared, and compelling? Are your methods still effective in reaching people? If not, it may be time to refresh both your vision and the ways your church engages with its community.
