The McKnight Group has been designing and building churches for over 50 years. One consistent truth we’ve observed during that time is that church design is always evolving.

There have been times, for example, when church buildings were designed with little consideration for the community or the specific ministry goals of the congregation. They were simply designed to resemble traditional churches. Many of these now appear dated and old-fashioned. Today, we’re living in an age where people seek authenticity, relevance, and purpose. That’s why the trend in modern church design has become mission-based.

Designing for Mission: The New Standard

A church building designed for mission may sound simple, but it’s really a powerful approach. It means determining who God is calling your church to reach, then basing your church design on the answer.

After all, a church building isn’t just a place to gather. It’s a strategic tool for ministry. The right church design supports outreach, hospitality, fellowship, and worship in ways that match your church’s vision. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all solution because no two churches are the same, and neither are their communities.

Designing for mission starts with asking the right questions:

  • What are your demographics?
  • What ministries do you feel called to develop?
  • What does your community need most?
  • How can your church building serve both your congregation and your neighbors?

Lessons from the 1970s: Breaking the Cookie-Cutter Mold

Consider churches built in the 1970s. Many followed a “cookie-cutter” formula: a sanctuary, a few classrooms, and maybe a fellowship hall, all designed with a “copy-paste” approach. While that served a purpose then, many of these church buildings can’t adapt to the realities of 21st-century ministry.

That’s why we’re seeing a wave of renovations and remodels to these and other aging facilities. Spaces are being updated to be more flexible, welcoming, and mission- driven. But it doesn’t mean that all these church buildings need to reflect a modern style.

Traditional or Modern? The Style Should Serve the Mission

Today’s church design can use a broad range of architectural styles. It can be contemporary, traditional, industrial, rustic, or even cutting-edge modern. The style isn’t the point. The mission is. Our goal isn’t to create something trendy, it’s to design a space that reflects the community and works for your God-given mission. That means a design that is bold, creative, and willing to stand out rather than blend in, no matter the style of the church building.
