It’s time for the next step along the path to creating your dream church building. So far, we’ve discussed the importance of having a catalyst for your project, conducting a needs assessment and discovery process, and addressing budgets and financing. Next is phase three: creating the architectural and engineering plans (Construction Documents) that will ultimately become your church building, and then getting those plans approved by various civil authorities.

This is where your vision moves from ideas and conversations to detailed drawings and specifications. Construction Documents require coordinated input from multiple licensed professionals who must design and submit documents in order for you to obtain your building permit. Simply put, this is where your church design becomes buildable.

Architectural Plans: Defining What the Building Will Be

Architectural plans go far beyond schematics and floor plans. Yes, they show what the building will look like, both inside and out, but they also define dimensions, materials, elevations, wall sections, and countless details that contractors rely on during construction.

In addition to the building itself, Civil Engineering plans address site-related components such as grading, stormwater management, utility locations, and retention areas. Where will water flow? How will it be detained or retained? Where do water, sewer, gas, and electrical lines enter the site?

Structural Engineering: Holding It All Together

Structural engineering plans are exactly what they sound like: they define how your church building will stand up and stay standing. Engineers calculate loads and determine how the building’s frame, foundation, beams, and roof systems will support the structure safely.

These plans include load calculations, framing diagrams, foundation details, and specifications for steel, concrete, or wood components. They also coordinate closely with plumbing risers and other vertical elements within the building.

HVAC: Designing for Comfort and Code Compliance

You cannot simply “throw HVAC units” onto a building and hope for the best. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems must be carefully engineered based on occupancy loads and how each space will be used.

A sanctuary filled with people on a Sunday morning has very different ventilation requirements than a classroom used midweek. Engineers must calculate air changes, fresh air requirements, and system capacity to ensure both comfort and compliance with building codes. HVAC design also impacts ceiling heights, mechanical room sizes, duct routing, and energy efficiency.

Electrical Engineering: Powering Your Church Building

Electrical engineering plans determine the size of service your building requires and how power is distributed throughout the facility. This includes panels, circuits, lighting systems, emergency power, and code-required safety systems. Engineers calculate demand loads to ensure that your church building has adequate capacity, not just for today’s needs, but for future growth.

Audio, Video, and Lighting: Planning for Worship Excellence

If you are building a sanctuary or large gathering space, it is important to involve audio/video/lighting experts early. They help determine infrastructure needs: conduit sizes, electrical capacity, cable pathways, equipment locations, and box placements within floors and walls. When these systems are not integrated into the architectural and engineering plans, construction crews are forced to add conduit runs, increase power capacity, or modify finished spaces, costing both time and money.

Security and IT: Protecting and Connecting Your Church

Security has become increasingly important for churches. Access control systems, cameras, buzz-in entries, and integrated security networks should be part of the initial planning process, not afterthoughts.

Similarly, IT infrastructure and Wi-Fi systems must also be planned. Where will data rooms be located? How will cabling run throughout the building? What wireless coverage is required?

Interior Design: Creating the Environment

Interior design involves selecting materials for floors, walls, ceilings, and finishes inside your new church building. What type of flooring will withstand heavy use? What wall materials balance durability and appearance? How do colors and finishes reinforce your church’s identity? These decisions regarding the look of the inside of the church building should be made while other constructions documents are drawn up.
