In some recent posts, we’ve explored what it means to have a vision for your church and what goes into a clear church vision. But what if you find yourself struggling to define a clear vision? Well, take comfort in the fact that you are not the first to struggle. Here are some actionable steps we’ve suggested to other church leaders to help them gain clarity and direction.

Identify Who

The first question to ask is, “Who are we trying to reach?” It may seem straightforward, but answering this question requires intentionality. Avoid overly broad answers like “everyone.” While your church doors are open to all, a clear vision is more focused. Consider narrowing it down—families, the next generation, unchurched individuals, or seekers are all examples of possible people to reach.

Why does specificity matter? In today’s culture, people often relate better to defined groups. Knowing where your church’s strengths lie. and where God is calling you, will help to determine this focus. Just keep in mind that broad goals can dilute your efforts, while specificity allows you to concentrate your resources on ministries that produce results.

Strategy Equals Ministry

Once you know who you are trying to reach, the next step is to determine how to reach them. Ministries are your strategies for connection. What does your target group need? For example, will you provide daycare for young families or offer programs for youth or adults? Should you support the homeless, offering food pantries, or leading workshops?

The possibilities are vast, but the key is focusing on what aligns with your church’s strengths and calling. Ask yourself:

  • Where is our church most effective?
  • What are we passionate about?
  • What resources and experience do we have?

This clarity will guide your ministries to effectively meet the needs of those you aim to reach. Remember, ministry isn’t just about activities—it’s about building relationships and fostering spiritual growth.

Evaluate

Finally, assess whether your current ministries align with your church’s vision. Are you holding onto programs because they’ve “always been done”? Or have you been creating ministries that truly reflect your church’s unique identity?

It’s also easy to fall into the trap of imitation—copying what other churches are doing. But what works for one congregation might not work for another. Instead, focus on what makes your church distinct. Identify what is within your capabilities, resources, and the gifts of your people.

Equally important is ensuring that there are people in your church who are passionate about your ministries. Without passion, even the best ideas can falter. Do you have volunteers or staff ready to dedicate their time, effort, and resources to bring these ministries to life? If not, it might be time to regroup and reevaluate. A vision without committed people to implement it will struggle to succeed.
