It showed several design samples for both exterior and interior public areas. Now, here are some ideas of what children’s areas and office suites can look like in practice.
Secure and Inviting Children’s Check-In Area
There’s no space in a church building that demands security and safety more than children’s areas. But that doesn’t mean these areas have to feel institutional or intimidating. This children’s check-in example is about 20 years old, but it truly demonstrates how church design can support security while also creating a welcoming and themed environment for kids and families in one image.
This check-in area, decorated with classic VeggieTales characters, immediately communicates “kid-friendly.” It also features a layered security strategy. Low doors provide a fun entry point for toddlers, but they also serve as a clear physical boundary. Adults intuitively understand that entry beyond that point is restricted.
Transparency plays a key role in the design. From the check-in zone, staff and parents can see directly into every classroom. Each door and room feature windows, giving volunteers a clear line of sight while teachers know that they can be always observed. This entire area fosters accountability and supervision without compromising a cheerful atmosphere.
Simple Safety Devices – Practical and Retrofit-Friendly
Some safety features in a church can be simple and easily added. even later as needs evolve. One such example is this straightforward lockdown device installed on a classroom door. While small and unobtrusive, it makes a big impact in terms of security during an emergency.

Secure Yet Welcoming Office Area
Security is important in other spaces in a church building. Office and administrative zones should be designed with limited access in mind. In this example, the church office entry is both aesthetically appealing and secure.
At first glance, it resembles a corporate office—warm, open, and inviting. Visitors can access the foyer and even ascend to the second floor. However, the layout is strategically designed so that no one can proceed into the staff-only areas without being buzzed in or accompanied by an authorized person.
