When it comes to a new church building or renovation, the structure itself is only part of the overall process. What goes inside that structure— the furnishings, finishes, and interior details— can make a significant difference in whether your church design is successful or not. These interior elements influence how people experience your ministry the moment they walk through your doors.

We’ve identified seven key steps church leaders should take to ensure interior design success. In this article, we’ll explore the first four, which all take place before any specific design elements are selected.

Making a First, and Lasting, Impression

It’s often said that you only get one chance to make a first impression, but for a church, that impression can have long-term consequences. Your church’s interior design helps tell your story. From the moment someone enters your building, the colors, lighting, materials, and finishes all contribute to how people experience your ministry.

That’s why thoughtful planning before any interior design decisions are made is so critical. Whether you’re constructing a new facility or renovating an existing one, a successful design begins long before choices of wall colors or flooring; it starts with vision, people, and planning.

Step 1: Define Your Vision

The first and most important step is to define your church’s vision for ministry. This is something that must be done before any steps are taken to create a church design, much less planning the interior elements. We discuss more about vision and how to define it in this article. Once established, focusing on your vision throughout the design process keeps your church aligned with God’s purpose.

Step 2: Assemble an Interior Design Team

The next step is to gather a small internal design team of three to five people who truly understand and embrace that vision. This team doesn’t have to be made up of interior design experts; it should include people who love your church, care deeply about the mission, and have a heart for the people you want to reach.

Step 3: Engage Professionals

After your internal team is in place, it’s time to bring in professionals. Depending on the project, this could include architects, interior designers, or design-build firms like The McKnight Group. Professionals contribute valuable expertise about what works well in church design, what materials are durable, which finishes are easier to maintain, and what products have the best long-term value.

Step 4: Master Plan Your Project

With your team and professionals in place, you’re ready to master plan your project. This is when you think big and define the full scope of your dream project before refining details. What would you include if resources were unlimited? What spaces would best support your ministries and outreach?

Once you have that big-picture vision, you can begin to prioritize phases based on your budget. Starting large allows you to identify the ideal plan, then strategically phase construction or renovation as needed. This approach ensures that every decision made today fits into your long-term goals for tomorrow.

Looking Ahead: Step 5 and Beyond

Only after completing these four foundational steps should you move to Step 5, selecting the interior finishes and furnishings that will bring your church design to life. We’ll explore that step in detail in upcoming posts, as there is much to consider.

For now, remember that success in interior church design begins with vision, team, professional expertise, and planning. Each step builds on the others to help your church create spaces that reflect your mission.
