Designing a Church with Purpose
Gateway Church’s journey began after a devastating fire destroyed their old church building. Faced with the challenge of starting anew, the congregation engaged in deep discussions about their mission and purpose. Not everyone initially agreed on the direction, but in the end, a majority embraced the vision of reaching the unchurched in a growing area of the city. The church purchased land in that area to relocate.
The McKnight Group partnered with Gateway Church leaders to create a facility that embodied their vision. This resulted in a building, pictured here, that meets the needs of both current members and new visitors and that is welcoming, accessible, and mission driven.
A Welcoming Entryway
The church’s main entry sets the tone for a warm and inviting atmosphere. First impressions matter, and the entryway was designed to immediately make all who enter feel comfortable. Bright, open spaces, thoughtful decor, and clear signage guide newcomers and provide a sense of belonging from the moment they step inside.
Inviting Spaces
Hospitality areas were designed to encourage connections. The café and adjoining seating area provide room for people to relax, build relationships, and engage in conversation. Large, welcoming restrooms also serve the church building and provide comfort and accessibility.
Outreach Areas for Families and Youth
To serve young families, the church includes outreach spaces, such as a large playland and a youth room, pictured here. These areas provide children and teenagers with opportunities to worship, socialize, and engage in activities during the week. In addition, a secure nursery area and checkpoint enhances safety and provides peace of mind for parents.
Flexible Meeting Rooms
For small group meetings and specialized services, the church design includes multi-functional areas like this fireside room. These spaces offer flexibility to hold gatherings, from intimate meetings to community events.
A Multi-Use Worship Center
The worship center, the heart of the church, was also designed with flexibility in mind. It features movable chairs and a large platform, allowing the space to be adapted for worship services, athletic events, dinners, and more. This versatility ensures that the church can host a wide range of activities, supporting their mission to reach the community.
