One of the challenges with many older church buildings is that entrances are not obvious. It’s not unusual to see old churches with multiple doors scattered around the building, sometimes on every side. While that may have made sense in the past, it can be confusing and even intimidating for first-time guests today. Which door is the right one? Where are you supposed to go?
That’s why user-friendly church design focuses on creating clear, visible entrances, often through the use of architectural transparency and intentional signage. First-time guests should know immediately where to enter. Being able to see into the building helps reassure everyone that there is activity inside, that they won’t be walking into an empty space, and that it’s a safe and welcoming place to be. A great example of this design principle is Bridgetown Church of Christ in Cincinnati. The McKnight Group worked on a relatively small addition to the church building, but the results are far-reaching for a user- friendly design. As this picture illustrates, it is very obvious where to enter, with large windows providing transparency into the building. Visitors can see light, activity, and other people already inside.
Easy Navigation for Visitors
Once inside the main door, the new foyer makes navigation simple and intuitive. The space is bright, open, and filled with natural daylight, which gives a positive impression right away. The entry is designed for clarity and flow, with each of the following easily visible:
- The worship auditorium is directly in front of you.
- A café is located to the right.
- Restrooms and the children’s check-in are to the left.
This layout means that even someone visiting for the very first time can quickly and confidently find where they need to go. Parents know exactly where to check in their children. Anyone can grab a coffee and connect with others, use the restroom, or head straight into the sanctuary without hesitation. In short, it’s a church design that reduces confusion and helps people feel at ease.
